​The origin of Scammell Lorries lies in Donhead St Mary were George Scammell was born in 1817 to a Wiltshire family of millers. By the late 1860s George, now in his fifties and with no children of his own, looked to his nephew, Alfred Thomas Scammell, to join the business as heir apparent the business became Scammell & Nephew Ltd. Alfred was living with his parents in West Mill Stalbridge aged 11 in 1861. Alfred Thomas Scammell (1850-1921), born at Donhead, Wilshire the son of Thomas Scammell, a miller of Stalbridge, Dorset. Thomas was the brother of George Scammell
Alfred Thomas Scammell was the nephew in G. Scammell and Nephew
1851 He is aged 1 and living with his parents Thomas (a Miller) and Sara W. at Stalbridge. [1]
1861 He is aged 11 and living with his parents Thomas (a Miller) and Sarah W. at Stalbridge. [2]
Alfred had son Alfred George Scammell born in 1879
1881 In the census he is aged 31 and is a coach and van builder employing about 70 men [3]
1891 He is aged 41, living in Hampstead and listed as a carriage, coach and van builder with his wife Mary and two sons (Alfred G. and Allan H.) and a daughter (Florence). [4]
1901 He is aged 41, living in Hampstead and listed as a van builder (Employer) with his wife Mary and son (Allan G) and daughter (Florence). [5]
