Salt Pot Cottage Church Hill Stalbridge

At the bottom right of this drawing is a cottage named "Salt Pot Cottage" named because of its shape situated where the post box is now and it is possible to see its location by the outline marks on the wall. In 1839 the cottage was occupied by Benjamin Harris 1756 - 1844 he was my 5th great-Grandfather. I have no idea when the cottage was demolished.

Very good image, Ian. I have the modern day photo and copies of the Tythe apportionments, but the old drawing is a new variant to me. Another confirmation we have a common ancestor.

Dave Harris we must also have a common ancestor somewhere. My maiden name is Harris and I've traced my Harris family back in Stalbridge to the early 1700s. The last Harris in my line leftin the mid to late 1800 to live in Portsmouth. Fascinating. My 2nd great grandfather Mark Harris who married Eliza Gould.

On this pic from a few years back, before the foliage covered it, you can clearly see the changes in the wall stonework indicating where the cottage once stood.

It would make sense for it to have been demolished in the victorian rework, as that was the 1870's. The cottage in the picture looks very close to where the vestry is now on the church. Maybe they used some of the stone from the cottage?

FANTASTIC!!!! I love the image of the church too. It shows how it looked before the Victorian reworking of the tower. Here's a google map image of the site today.
