​Gibbs Marsh Farm


Charles Keevil is listed as the tenant of Gibbs Marsh Farm in in the 1841 census. In 1852 his son, Thomas, had taken over the tenancy, transferring from Gray’s Farm.
Thomas, born 1818, married Lucy (nee Witteridge), born at Okeford Fitzpaine in 1823, in 1844. They had five children, John born 1851, Fanny born 1853, Kate born 1863, Emma born 1863 and Walter born 1887.
Thomas died in 1883. His eldest son, John, passed away in 1886, aged 36, and Walter just three years later, aged 21.
Ernest Harris was the sitting tenant the time of the 1918 sale retiring the following year.
Arthur Sharp purchased Gibbs Marsh Farm at the 1918 sale along with lots 69,69a and 69b for a sum of 8,050.00d. Arthur was the eldest child of John and Elizabeth Sharp, born at Marnhull in 1873. His father was a butcher.
Arthur, married Amelia (nee Keevil), born in 1874, in 1895. They had 6 children, including two sons, Arthur, born 1897, died 1907, and David, born 1899. David married Katherine Goldie in 1923.
Arthur and Amelia Sharp, listed in the 1939 Kelly’s directory, as Arthur and Amelia Sharp and sons, farmers at Gibbs Marsh Farm, were calf dealers and had a slaughterhouse at the farm.
Amelia passed away in 1944 and Arthur in1956 aged 82
