Ernest John Curtis purchased the freehold of the Stalbridge Arms, at the 1918 sale, for a sum of £2,600.00d. Lot 81 included three cottages, 30 acres of land and associated farm buildings.
Ernest, born in Stalbridge in 1879, was the eldest son of Edwin, born 1850, died 1916, and Elizabeth (nee Heard), born in 1852 at Wadebridge, Cornwall. In 1871, Elizabeth was employed by Felix Cox, living, and working, at Manchester House, as a draper. They married in 1875.
Ernest married Kate Jones, born in 1878, in 1900. Kate was the daughter of the previous landlord of the Stalbridge Arms Edward Jones. Edward, born at Clifton, near Bristol, in 1824, is listed in the 1891 census as the landlord of the Stalbridge Arms, living there with his wife Alice, born in 1840, and daughter Kate, both were born at Delamere near Northwich, in Cheshire.
Edward was still residing in Stalbridge in 1901, aged 77. Alice passed away in 1900 and Edward, in 1910, at the age of 86.
Ernest Curtis remarried in 1906 to Zoe (nee Tite) born in 1882. They had 5 children, Ernest Edwin born on Christmas Eve 1907, Kathleen 1908, Ronald 1911, Leslie 1914 and Vera 1917.
Ernest held the license of the Stalbridge Arms for a period of 33 years, from 1901 to 1934, having previously worked as a carpenter. Zoe passed away in 1926, at the age of 43.
Their eldest son, Ernest Edwin, was educated at Fosters School, Sherborne, and the Royal College of Science. In 1934, he was ordained, starting his career as a curate at Holy Trinity, Waltham Cross. Other appointments included priest in charge of St Wilfrid, Portsmouth, then vicar of All Saints, in the same city and rural dean of Alverstoke.
In 1966 he was appointed the Bishop of Mauritius, until 1972, when he became the first archbishop of the Indian Ocean, covering the islands of Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles He died in 1999 at the age of 92.
