Lot 148 and 148a Gold Street
The presale tenant of Lot 148, Richard Clarke, was the youngest of six children born to William and Mary Ann Clarke. William (1822-1892) was a shoe maker and his wife Mary Ann 1824-1904) a shoe binder. Their eldest son George and second eldest, Samuel worked with their parents after leaving school.
Richard, born in 1864, was employed at the Gold Street milk factory. Richard married Fanny (nee Webber), born in 1875 at Stalbridge in 1904. Her parents were Frederick and Maryann and in 1881 they are recorded as living at Ring Street, with Fanny as the eldest of their three children.
Richard and Fanny had two children, Kitty born in 1905 and George born in 1910.
In 1939, they are recorded as living in retirement, in a dwelling next to the Lloyds Bank house.
The presale tenant of Lot 148a, Walter Senior, was born in 1879 at Ring Street. His parents were James (1845-1900) and Rhoda (nee Grimes, 1851- 1919). He was the third youngest of their seven children.
Walter, a mason, married Annie (nee Higgins), born in 1878 at Hannington near Swindon, in 1910. A daughter Joan was born in 1915.
Walter passed away in 1956, when living at Stanton Cottage, Gold Street, and Annie in 1958.
