SURVEY OF 1705 for the Lord of the Manor, PETER WALTER
A list of Stalbridge Tenants in 1705 is given below; many surnames will be familiar today and although exact placings of most houses is impossible, there are some who may pick out former occupants of their dwellings. It will be noticed that some tenants held leases of more than one house. (Twenty one houses were unplaced in the Survey and it is not known how many other dwellings were privately owned).

MIDDLE of the TOWN: John Joy, Dorothy Locke, Lewis Morgan holds an Inn called the Hinde with Outhouses and Garden, Jonas Pavett, George Pooll, (Swan Yard), Robert Rogers, George Tyte, Robert Tyte of Church Hill, Thomas Tyte of Horsepond, Thomas Tyte of Broad Stone, Thomas Wilmott.
Lewis Morgan of The Hinde paid £10, the rest paid from f2 to £6 rent.
John Willoughby holds the Inn called the Black Lyon & the Tolls of the Fairs & Marketts (f10 rent). The Black Lyon Inn was on the south side of Gold Street at its junction with High Street. Gartrude Gartrell holds a Messuage Garden Backside in the great Street lately the Swan. PARSONAGE: Near the Parsonage - Abraham Townsend, Christian Ware, Nicholas Watts. Over against the Parsonage - Robert Gibbons.
